City of Longmont
Founded in 1871 and named after "Longs Peak" Longmont has come a long way from her agricultural roots. The city was planned in a 1 square grid plan, and the location was chosen for the rich soil and the availability of water through irrigation ditches. First to appear were flour mills in 1872 followed by the J. Empson & Daughter Vegetable Cannery in 1887. In 1902 the Great Western Sugar Co. (Sugar Beets grow well in our soil) started operations and continued operation until the mid 1970´s.
Longmont is composed of 22 square miles and has over 1500 acres of parks. The City is also the location of the Boulder County Fairgrounds, and is home to many high tech companies. The Main Street is vibrant with shops and restaurants, and today the population hovers around 70,000. In the early 1990´s the famous architect Andres Dunay designed "Prospect New Town", an Urbanist development located on the Southern end of town, which has been featured in many magazines as well as HGTV.
