City of Lafayette

Founded in 1888 by Mary Miller and named after her husband Lafayette, after she moved back to the family farm following her husbands´ death. In 1884 coal was discovered on the Miller farm. In 1888 Mary Miller designated 150 acres of

The farm for the town of Lafayette and the town was incorporated in 1890. The Town of Lafayette joined the mining boom. The Black Diamond mine closed in 1956 and Lafayette returned to an agricultural

economy. Today, however there is a thriving community around the "Old Town" area with shops and restaurants in the historic buildings. Lafayette hosts an Oatmeal festival, a Peach Festival, a Wine Festival and Lafayette Days.
